Jacob Burris looks like any other 14-year-old boy on the outside, but on the inside, a Dacron tube holds his aorta together and keeps his heart pumping strong. His rare heart condition has earned Jacob the nickname 'The Bionic Boy' from his family. It's also inspired him to raise awareness about heart health. He spends his free time playing baseball, practicing the drums and playing with his pet hamster Jamal. Jacob's design aspirations go beyond footwear and apparel. He says he'd like to design video games someday, the kind that let you choose your own storyline. In other words, Jacob likes the game of life—and he'd like to thank the Doernbecher doctors for saving his. Jacob's Nike Air Max 95 Premium (Doernbecher) Men's Shoe features inspirational quotes and signature details to represent Jacob's driven spirit that walks to its own beat.
JACOB'S DESIGN
Jacob has turned his Air Max 95 Premium into a heart health public service announcement of sorts. The tongue urges you to "Check your BP" and features a heart made out of Jacob’s thumbprint. Other stand-out features include a circuit board pattern (sticking with the bionic theme), a heart graphic under the heel and the phrase "I walk to my own beat" on the sockliner. The red and blue palette is a nod to his favorite superhero, Spider-Man. One amazing adornment is Stan Lee's signature on Jacob's shoe. The two met at a comic book convention, and when Jacob asked the comic book legend if he would lend his name to a good cause, Lee was happy to oblige.
BENEFITS
NIKE AIR MAX ORIGINS
Nike's revolutionary Air-Sole unit made its way into Nike footwear in the late '70s. In 1987, the Nike Air Max 1 debuted with visible air in its heel, allowing fans more than just the feel of Air-Sole comfort—suddenly they could see it. Since then, next-generation Nike Air Max shoes have become a hit with athletes and collectors by offering striking color combinations and reliable, lightweight cushioning.
